This module equips non-accounting students with the basic financial skills they will need to progress through their management-related degree studies. Students will learn the fundamental processes behind the production of historic financial information, allowing them to conduct analysis of financial statements. Additionally, students will develop knowledge of cost behaviours and forecasting, allowing them to make decisions such as how to price their product. The module allows students to bring together their financial skills by preparing extracts from a business plan as part of an application for finance. Emphasis will be placed on practical skills relevant to entrepreneurs and small business owners. You will study the management of brands, finances, events and people across the fashion chain, from design and development, to manufacturing and the supply chain, to sales and marketing.

The Part-time Work Placement module requires students to work in partnership with host organisations in the private or public sectors with an interest in educating students for the demands of the complex world of work. Students undertake a skills audit before being accepted on to the scheme and will only be considered for this module if they have an attendance record in year two of at least 80%. The outcomes from this, and the availability of appropriate placement and academic supervisors, will determine whether students can proceed with this module. Students will be involved in the tracking of employability skills and in personal development planning.

If you are committed to breaking into the fashion industry, it will give you the best possible chance do so. Those with a non-fashion degree will find it difficult to compete with fashion graduates and will therefore need to study a postgraduate fashion degree. It is possible to get onto a fashion degree straight after studying A levels, Scottish Highers, a BTEC extended diploma or another suitable level three qualification. You will focus on the development of textiles for use in the fashion industry through print, knit, embroidery and embellishment and through the use of both traditional craft techniques and contemporary digital processes. You will develop your knowledge of fabrics, colour and silhouette, engage in textile sampling and prototype testing in 2D and 3D and explore areas such as fashion awareness, trend forecasting, illustration, pattern cutting and garment construction.

However, the most important requirement is a proven enthusiasm for and knowledge of fashion. This is why almost all fashion courses, apart from the business-focused degrees, ask you to submit a portfolio of your work and attend an interview to discuss this portfolio. Studying an art and design subject is often essential, especially for the creative degrees such as fashion design, and is the easiest way to build up a portfolio of work.
